Formal dining

Aunt Maude's, Ames DownTown Both the decor and the menu tend to be a bit heavy. Does a good trade with the expense account crowd. Good food, good wine. Has a well-stocked bar. The bartop is nice and long, made of DuPont Corian(tm). It's not zinc, but it probably wears better.

The Cafe, Ames, Somerset Village. A bit more whimsical than dear old Aunt Maud's. An early cornerstone business of the Somerset subdivision, what with it's emphasis on the "village" design concept. Bistro style--you get your wine in a tumbler, not a wineglass. Big focus on fresh, local produce and products. Open kitchen. Bakery and coffee bar on one side, with tables and stools; regular bar with stools and booths on the other side. Young, competent, attractive waitstaff.

The Audobon, Ames, Gateway Hotel. Also does good business with the expense-account crowd. A bit off the beaten path sitting as it does south of Highway 30.

The Cottage, Story City. More so off the beaten path, but if you go early in the summer, maybe you can stop for a ride on the antique carousel on the east side of town. Nice, but a bit more down-to-earth than the other restaurants in the category.

Upscale informal dining

O'Malley McGee's, Ames, South Duff. Not to be confused with that other, chain Irish O'Mexican chain in town. This one is an original. Extensive bar area--not quite a sports bar, but has a few screens up.

Pizza Kitchens, Ames, CampusTown. Doesn't deliver, but will do take out for it's selection of pizzas. Hand-formed crusts, yum. Good vegetarian topping selections (haven't you even heard of spinach, Great Plains?) Does an all-you-can eat salad and pizza bar buffet.

Bali Satay, Ames, CampusTown. Indonesian with other Asian cuisines. Moved a few doors over from it's former location into a nicely sized place. Has a strong following of daily or weekly regulars among faculty. Hardwood floors. A small bar in back. Hosts the occasional show, but folds up the stage for the weekday business.

Cafe Lovish, Ames, CampusTown

Informal, sit-down, non fast-food dining and "genre" food

Battles BBQ, Ames, CampusTown. Nevada. You can see the smokehouse out back. Not much room for seating, so arrive early or late, or prepare to fight it out for a place to perch. Menu? Has tips. Pork, turkey, or beef. Beans. Slaw. Pickle. Chips. Lemonade. Pop. What more do you want? Does catering and take-out. Take your vegetarian friends and family elsewhere.

La Azteca, Ames, Dayton Road at South 16th. Chicken dishes good. For margaritas, try La Fuente.

Cy's Roost, Ames, CampusTown.

People's Bar & Grill. Southeast corner of Lincoln Way and Welch Ave. Typical grilled bar food. Offers a veggie burger. Kitchen way too small and therefore, slow. Rarely worth the wait for food in groups bigger than 3 or 4, unless you've got time to kill and get a window seat to watch the traffic at the campustown gateway. Not a bad location for afternoon sportsbar action. One of the perennial, if not the perennial, campustown music venues. They leave the stage in place.

The Scallion (Korean), Ames, CampusTown. If you can get yourself past the pet shop odor from The Ark in the same building, and like Korean, this place is tidy and efficient and friendly.

Chinese Home Style Cooking (aka CHC), CampusTown. Best Hot & Sour soup ever.

whatever that Thai place is around the corner from the clocktower, across the street from the firestation. If you've got a hankering for something with baby corn and coconut milk, this is the place.

West Street Deli. Good selection of sandwiches, toasted. Almost always has chili available, plus another soup or so.

Fast food and take-out places

Subway, Ames, many locations (Union, Main St, Welch Ave, .... An interesting exercise is to enumerate all of them from memory. There are 7 currently)

Wendy's, Ames, West LincolnWay, South Duff

McDonalds, Ames, South Duff, West LincolnWay

HyVee, Ames, LincolnWay, West LincolnWay

Taco Time, LincolnWay

Golden Wok, Ames, CampusTown (Welch)

Bruegger's Bagels, Ames, LincolnWay.

Quizno's. Two locations, one on LincolnWay just west of Duff, one on LincolnWay in CampusTown, just east of WelchAve.

Jimmy Johns, CampusTown and DownTown

Coffee Houses, Bars and the Like

Stomping Grounds, CampusTown Expanded into the location vacated by Coe's Florists in their move to Somerset. Lots of room. Coffee any which way, of course, pastries, and some other lunch options and so forth. Light, open venue.

Boheme Bistro, WestStreet (Hosts BohemianPoetrySlam first Tuesday of every month). In an old grocery store building. Dark, with backlit stained glass. Good wines.

Cafe Diem, DownTown

This is intended to be an informal community-developed resource listing restaurants (and perhaps other food-related retail estabishments) in and around Ames, Iowa, and to capture some of the opinions of the contributors about those restaurants. As opinion, its structure and content will by nature be somewhat arbitrary, and should not in any way be taken as definitive.

The categories here, for instance, are somewhat arbitrary.

Please restrict entries in formal dining to those places that would be appropriate for a business dinner, for example, to take a job candidate for a faculty position or a management position.

Entries in upscale formal dining might be appropriate for taking such a candidate to lunch, perhaps also for dinner with these candidates.

Entries in the third informal, sit-down dining might be nice for going out with your colleagues for lunch.

Fast food and take-out are those that don't fit in the previous categories, or which are part of chains that are obviously known as, or marketed as, fast food.

Please feel free to add additional listings, or to provide further objective details about any of the listings (location, hours, menu items, cost range). For more subjective descriptions, please try to be fair and to follow a [BadWikiTag]NeutralPointOfView. Remember, all entries are subject to editing or possible deletion. Blatant promotional entries will be pared down or deleted, and persistent attempts may lead to blocked access.

If you read a comment here you feel unfairly disparages a place, feel free to expand on the entry for that place with balancing commentary. Entries here do not undergo prior review before being visible on the website, though they may be edited later. In particular, we encourage you to correct any factual errors.
